Alberta Class 5 License and Road Practice Test

For the first exit from a roundabout, which action sequence is correct?

Approach using the left lane, signal left, ignore pedestrians.

Stop before the roundabout and wait for a sign.

Approach using the right lane, signal right, check for pedestrians and cyclists.

Exiting a roundabout safely hinges on choosing the correct lane, signaling your intention, and staying aware of pedestrians and cyclists. For the first exit, you should enter in the right-hand lane that aligns with exiting to the right. As you approach and as you prepare to leave, use your right-turn signal to indicate you are exiting at the first opportunity. This alerts other drivers and helps prevent surprises as you leave the circulating traffic. At all times, scan for pedestrians and cyclists who may be crossing near the roundabout or near the exit.

This approach is safer and clearer than using the left lane and signaling left, stopping for a sign, or exiting immediately from the left. Those actions can confuse other drivers, increase conflict in the roundabout, and put vulnerable road users at risk.

Use the left lane and exit immediately.
